Post Christmas temperatures reached over 40F; the previous snowfall of autumn is steadily melting. The low winter sun gives us some great coloring in the otherwise gray season.

The signature vernal pool on the Vernal Pool Trail at the Smithfield Plantation. By the end of a typical August, this body of water is dry with a bed of damp leaves.
