Sunday cardinal

For all the hard work and preparation that sometimes is required to get pleasing images of wild life, there are days when you get out of your car in your driveway and you have a picture. This was one of those days: after running into the house and grabbing the camera, this pileated woodpecker kept at work on one of our trees.
Twenty or more years ago, this open space was part of the forest seen in the background. The creek that winds it way through here was dammed by beavers and the open space now filled with grasses, bushes, and dead tree trunks became a lake. Among the grasses and bushes are small trees that will grow into a forest again (if the humans don’t develop it first).
