Another look at the egret hanging around the Great Marsh
A couple days ago while walking along the west side of the Great Marsh on Mason Island, we found an egret poking around. Eventually the bird grabbed a snack from the marsh channel he was wading in.
From about a month before the Covidians showed up last year (2020), we found these Canada geese floating around the Ice Pond in Mystic (as they typically do). They manage to socially distance themselves as a routine
During an early afternoon walk in Mill Park, Augusta, Maine. This osprey was perched above the Kennebec river when it spied another osprey going after a fish.
We have had a long hummingbird season this year. When advised that they were appearing in Maine toward the end of April, I managed to deploy a feeder. I anticipated few visitors since we barely had green foliage around the yard and no natural flowers to speak of. We got swamped with activity. It has been that way all year. I have two feeders and have to fill them every three or four days now.
To continue our egret theme of last weekend, here is the fourth egret seen during my walks. Really, these were all different animals!
This is the nest near the Great Marsh boat dock which has some chicks. The mom, I think, is shown here. This was taken a couple minutes after the osprey pictured in the previous post delivered a freshly caught fish.
Last weekend as we departed the Great Marsh, we heard a cry from above. Then we saw this osprey flying back and forth over the marsh with a definite interest in my presence. It turned out that he was bothered how close I was to a nest in a tree near me. Once I walked away from this tree, he (I am sure this was the male counterpart of the family as the mom was already sitting in the nest protecting chicks) flew over to the nest.
As will be obvious from this week’s posts, we found a number of egrets anywhere we went along the Connecticut shore last weekend. Here was a casual wader near the yacht club.
