Miss hummingbird

After several weeks of refreshing our new hummingbird feeder with nectar and monitoring it as best as a busy person can, we caught a customer taking a drink.

Tree hugger

D81_1720z_150805_161For all the hard work and preparation that sometimes is required to get pleasing images of wild life, there are days when you get out of your car in your driveway and you have a picture. This was one of those days: after running into the house and grabbing the camera, this pileated woodpecker kept at work on one of our trees.

Blackbird on the bog

D81_1433_150703_137On the Smithfield Plantation (land reserved as a nature conservancy in Litchfield, ME), there is swampy bog where this blackbird always appears during the summer season to get his picture taken.

Nuthatch meal time

D81_1416_150702_138After waiting twenty minutes for some action on the far bog, this white-breasted nuthatch showed up. After checking out this old, dead tree, he found some food as I prayed for him to get out of the shadows.

Mom brings dinner

Our friends in Maryland have maintained a birdhouse for bluebirds for years. Apparently if one doesn’t keep the birdhouse clean, the bluebirds stay away and field sparrows take up residence.

Bog visitor

D81_1027_150607_134Another local inhabitant cruises the bog for food. This is probably a savannah sparrow but I am still researching. His distinctive belly color pattern should help me narrow it down.

Blackbird in the bog

D81_1011_150607_132I had a very productive weekend. We ended up capturing a pleasing variety of birds. Here we found a red-wing blackbird at the Smithfield Plantation bog. Every year they endlessly survey this swampland for food.
