Bog visitor

D81_1027_150607_134Another local inhabitant cruises the bog for food. This is probably a savannah sparrow but I am still researching. His distinctive belly color pattern should help me narrow it down.

Blackbird in the bog

D81_1011_150607_132I had a very productive weekend. We ended up capturing a pleasing variety of birds. Here we found a red-wing blackbird at the Smithfield Plantation bog. Every year they endlessly survey this swampland for food.

Robin at the top

D81_0934_150606_122This robin first appeared at least a 100 yards away. I was able to take his picture with reasonable quality before moving closer. Once I was there, the two previous postings of a blue jay and cardinal was made possible.

Evening snack on the old birch tree

D81_0738_150517_118A downy woodpecker spends most evenings pecking away at old trees near our house.

Local mallards upstream

D81_0787_150521_107Here are the mallards who are making the nearby creek their home this spring. I don’t see them on every walk around the bog but they appear regularly in various spots. They do not seem to be as nervous when we approach as some other birds in our neighborhood.

Woodpecker tree 4

D81_0701_150510_106The hole patterns on this trunk do not suggest the work of a pileated woodpecker or a sapsucker; it is just a great spot for any sort of woodpecker’s lunch … The last of the series.

Woodpecker tree 3

D81_0685_150510_104This tree was a pileated woodpecker favorite.
