Waiting for Spring

D81_0358_150323_55The back woods waits for the snow pack to go: two-and-a-half-feet to go.

Moon in the Maine woods

D81_0375_150331_57Toward the end of an early spring day, the pre-eclipse moon rises above the beaver bog. The subtle reflection of the setting sun on the tree trunks made this one special for me.

A real winter on the bog

D81_0303_150307_46zThe beaver bog looks quite empty with three feet or more snow lying around.  The countdown to the bog’s version of “ice-out” has begun, however.

Maine winter sunset

IMG_1802zLast week during the January thaw in mid-March in central Maine, we had a great unplanned sunset show. I got stuck behind a slow driver while the best part of the sunset occurred overhead. Here is what I was able to capture when I got to the local hilltop.

Winter woodpecker

D81_0309_150307_47zA rare walk in the backwoods this winter allowed us to see the woodpeckers at work. Here a female downy woodpecker was found twenty-five feet in the forest ceiling.

Wandering tracks

D81_0235_150110_01zWandering through the back woods last week; the lack of regular snowfall allows numerous tracks to accumulate.
