image SAM_08270545z
A cormorant gets lucky at lunchtime in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, on Sunday. A returning fisherman threw a fish to this beggar of a bird.

Saturday breakfast stop 1

image D81_6948_zWe waited a couple hours outside on the front steps this morning hoping one of our summer residents came by for a snack. We got ready with a smaller, lighter camera with a tripod. It soon showed a “battery Low” warning. Went and got my more robust rig and waited. Suddenly, there it was!

Bittern on the march

image d7k_7557_zThis is another image of a “least American bittern.” I am guessing it is the same one I saw on 13-August (see my earlier post). We caught up with him this evening on the no-name pond.

Bird at the pond’s edge

D81_6876_z imageWe were surprised to spot this crow-sized bird along the shore of the no-name pond the other day. At the time and after checking my references, I am not sure if this is a heron or a bittern (a least American bittern is a good possibility from field mark descriptions).

Robin gathers lunch

D81_6708_z imageAs mentioned previously, our yard has become a regular hunting ground for an energetic robin. We see her getting worms and other small things for a likely nest somewhere nearby.
